Help Palm Coast Fire Department Keep the Wreaths Green by Preventing Fires

The holiday season is underway, and the Palm Coast Fire Department is asking everyone to help keep the wreaths green at the City's fire stations by preventing fires.

Project Green Wreath is a fire prevention program that runs through the month of December. Large wreaths have been hung at all five stations, with green light bulbs in each. Firefighters will replace one green light with a red light for each structure fire during the month.

"Project Green Wreath is a visual reminder of the importance of implementing and following fire safety practices during the holiday season," said Palm Coast Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill. "We hope everyone will do their part to keep the wreaths green!"

The City of Palm Coast and Joey Christmas go around the home to present practical, fire-wise tips for the holidays. Joey Christmas is played by PCFD Lt. Joey Paci, and also appearing are Lt. Paci’s wife, Abby Paci, and Lt. Matt Stevens.

The Palm Coast Fire Department encourages residents to follow Joey Christmas’ safety tips:

• Don’t overload circuits or extension cords. 
• Check all light strings for damage; throw away light strings if they have frayed cords or sockets and replace them with UL-approved devices.
• Choose live Christmas trees with fresh, green needles that don’t fall off when touched.
• Never keep a tree close to an ignition source such as a candle. 
• Water your trees daily.
• Never store anything flammable inside your oven.
• Clean your oven and stove regularly.
• Never leave food unattended while cooking on the stove.
• Keep candles at a safe distance from children and decorations, especially trees; never leave a candle unattended or burning through the night.
• Always exercise proper ladder safety when putting up or taking down holiday decorations.
• Double check your smoke alarms and make sure they are in good working order.
