On July 18, campers at Palm Coast’s Fun in the Sun Summer Camp welcomed special visitors who encouraged them to dream big about the future of their city. Acting City Manager Lauren Johnston, Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill, Communications and Marketing Director Brittany Kershaw, Parks and Recreation Director James Hirst, and Deputy Director Brittany McDermott spent the afternoon with the campers, sparking conversations about what their ideal Palm Coast would look like.

As part of the interactive session, campers shared their colorful visions of the city’s future, drawing parks, community centers, fire stations, and even theme parks and skate parks. Their creativity reflected the heart of Palm Coast’s commitment to thoughtful growth and innovation.

“Getting to hear from our youngest residents was inspiring and rewarding,” said Acting City Manager Lauren Johnston. “Their ideas were creative and exciting, and they reminded us that everything we build today – from parks and playgrounds to safe neighborhoods and new opportunities – is shaping the Palm Coast they’ll inherit. I’m grateful for the incredible team that joined me, as well as our amazing Parks and Recreation staff for all they do to make camp such a special experience for these kids every single day.”

The ”Build Your Own Palm Coast” activity was created and organized by Communications and Marketing Manager Shannon Martin and included all of the aspects of a city that help make it special. The campers were split into three groups, and each group spent about 45 minutes building their cities with the help of city staff. Over 60 campers were able to participate and share their vision for what they’d like to see in their City’s future.

The Fun in the Sun Summer Camp, organized by Palm Coast Parks & Recreation, is a dynamic program for kids ages 5-13 that brings summer to life with themed weekly sessions. Each week offers a mix of field trips to local attractions, hands-on creative projects, games, sports, and engaging special guest visits designed to entertain and inspire. The program encourages campers to explore their community, make new friends, and discover the many ways they can be part of Palm Coast’s bright future.
